Stoney Creek Councillor Brad Clark is running for mayor.

The former Progressive Conservative cabinet minister under Ontario premier Mike Harris registered on Monday, the first working day after Bob Bratina announced he won’t seek re-election.

He had promised not to run against Bratina, Clark said.

“But candidly, he surprised me,” Clark said about Bratina’s unexpected announcement on Friday (March 14).

Why him? “I can pick up the phone and call ministers; I know them,” Clark said shortly after registering.

He noted he came to council being asked to run for mayor, but wanted council experience first. “Now it’s the right time for me and the city.”
